Airdrie RCMP arrest armed suspect

January 29, 2025
Airdrie, Alberta

News release

On Jan. 27, 2025, Airdrie RCMP was conducting speed enforcement patrols on Edmonton Trail NE Airdrie and initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle for speeding and illegal window tint. The traffic stop led to a further investigation indicative of proceeds of crime, and both the female driver and male passenger were arrested.

During the arrest, the male passenger exited the vehicle and fled from police on foot. A foot pursuit ensued, and police successfully apprehended the male. A search incidental to arrest located a loaded 40 caliber firearm on his person. The male presented false identification; however, police were able to determine his true identification.

The male was wanted on Canada-wide warrants, for two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, stemming from a 2018 homicide investigation in Toronto. As the male was a young offender at the time of charges, his identity will remain confidential at this time. He was further charged with additional charges:

  • Firearm offences X5
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Identify Fraud charges X3
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.00
  • Counterfeit money
  • Resist/Obstruct Peace Officer x2

The driver, a 25-year-old individual, a resident of Burnaby, B.C., has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.00
  • Counterfeit money

Both have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance at Airdrie Provincial Courthouse on Jan. 30, 2025.

This occurrence serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and dangers that come with police work, even while performing routine tasks. Therefore, police would like to remind the community of the importance of allowing law enforcement time and space while in the execution of their duties. This allows officers to perform their work, maintain professional standards and focus, all while maintaining the public's safety and upholding the law. The failure to do so can create unnecessary safety risks and legal consequences.
