Suspect still at large; One dead and one injured in connection with police operation

UPDATE: September 6, 2024: The #RCMPNB are releasing a new photo of a 47-year-old man, as police continue to search for him in the Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation area.

The New Brunswick RCMP confirms that one person is dead and another is injured, which initiated an Alert Ready to be issued for the Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation area, near Neguac, N.B. Police are still actively searching for the 47-year-old man in connection with the incident.

On September 5, 2024, at approximately 1:47 p.m., members of the Neguac RCMP Detachment responded to a call for assistance from a member of the public who had sustained a firearm-related injury. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of a deceased 48-year-old man, and another man with injuries. The injured man was transported to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon investigation regarding a suspect, at approximately 3:59 p.m., an Alert Ready issued for armed individual was sent to advise residents of Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation, N.B., to remain inside, and others to avoid the area, while police searched for the man who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

Police continue to search for a 47-year-old man, who is believed to be carrying a firearm with dangerous intent in the area. He is described as having dark hair, and was last seen wearing a gray jacket, jeans, a black winter hat, and was carrying a bag. He has a bandage and blood on his forehead. He was last seen on travelling Diggle Point Road however police are no longer searching for the vehicle.

Police are encouraging residents to remain vigilant, and to report any sightings of the man. There will be an increased police presence in the area as police continue their search.
