Planning in advance for a safe Halloween

News release

Many Nova Scotians will spend the next week planning for a fun Halloween. Nova Scotia RCMP is reminding the public to also plan for safety.

  • Parent or guardians of young children should review the rules of the roads in advance of Halloween night. Children many forget about the importance of staying on sidewalks or looking both ways when they are excited about visiting the next home for treats. Discussing safe trick-or-treating in advance may allow for these reminders to stick.
  • Older kids who may be trick-or-treating without an adult should ensure that they are with a group, and that the adults in their lives know who they will be with and where (neighbourhoods, streets) they will be. Consider mapping out a route in advance and talking about safety suggestions, like only going to houses that have lights on and not going inside houses or vehicles to get treats.
  • Anyone planning a costume for kids or themselves should think about a bright costume that will allow the wearer to be visible while walking on or crossing dark streets. Consider adding glowsticks, flashlights, or reflective elements to outfits. If a costume includes a toy weapon, ensure that it is obvious that the item is not real, and, if relevant, is made of a soft or flexible material.
  • Drivers who will be out in their vehicles on October 31 from late afternoon until evening should plan to allow extra travel time and drive slow, even in places that trick-or-treaters might not usually be expected. Although it always important to drive sober, with kids out on Halloween, planning for a designated driver or another safe ride is vital for anyone who anticipates drinking or using cannabis.

"Halloween can be a fun day for kids of all ages, and a bit of preparation can also promote a safe day for anyone who plans to celebrate," says Cpl. Carlie McCann, Nova Scotia RCMP Public Information Officer.
