Charlottetown, PE – PEI RCMP traffic enforcement actions have resulted in eight drivers being stopped for impaired operation of a vehicle by cannabis in just the past four days. Yesterday, an additional driver was charged with impaired operation of a vehicle by alcohol after RCMP were called to assist a car stuck in a snow bank.

Since the start of 2024, PEI RCMP have stopped 30 impaired drivers, 9 of these have been impaired by cannabis. "Impaired driving, whether by alcohol or drugs, is just never a good idea," says RCMP Constable Jamie Parsons. "We have special equipment in our patrol cars to test for impairment either way, and we are using them with great effect, getting possibly dangerous drivers off Island roads," adds Cst. Parsons.

Last year RCMP laid charges on approximately 230 impaired driving investigations.

"We are patrolling Island roads 24/7 and remind anyone that if they see a suspected impaired driver, to call 9-1-1," says Cst. Parsons. "By choosing to drive sober you are protecting your life, and the lives of those you share the road with," adds Cst. Parsons.
