RCMP Headquarters, PEI – Beginning tomorrow, some PEI RCMP officers will be equipped with body-worn cameras. Over the next few months, this initiative will extend to all operational units across the province.
Body-worn cameras can help increase trust between police and the communities they serve. They can provide video evidence that is independent, unbiased, and objective capturing interactions between the community and police officers.
Body-worn cameras will be active during all calls for service, with limited exceptions in situations where there is a heightened expectation of privacy. This tool will serve as an impartial observation system to document interactions, collect additional evidence, and enhance accountability for both officers and the public they engage with.
"This program represents a significant step forward in our commitment to transparency, accountability, and trust," said Chief Superintendent Kevin Lewis, Commanding Officer for the PEI RCMP. "Body-worn cameras provide a clear and objective record of events, helping to resolve conflicts and offering valuable evidence for investigations and court proceedings."
