On October 30, 2024 at approximately 2:30 p.m., Saskatchewan RCMP's North Battleford Crime Reduction Team – Gang Task Force (CRT-GTF) executed a search warrant at a residence on Moosomin First Nation. The warrant was executed as part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the Battlefords area.
At the residence, officers located and seized a replica firearm, two rifles, a loaded homemade firearm, approximately 45 grams of pre-packaged methamphetamine, along with small amounts of cocaine and suspected MDMA. Officers also located and seized various ammunition, bear spray, a conducted energy weapon and drug trafficking paraphernalia.
Two adult females and five adult males were arrested at the residence.
As a result of investigation, 41-year-old Nicole Poitras of Moosomin First Nation is charged with:
- one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
- three counts, possession of a firearm when knowing possession unauthorized, Section 92(1), Criminal Code;
- two counts, possession of a prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized, Section 92(2);
- two counts, possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammunition without license/registration, Section 95(1), Criminal Code;
- five counts, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Section 88(1), Criminal Code; and
- three counts, unsafe storage of firearms, Section 86(2), Criminal Code.
23-year-old Lyle Night of Saulteaux First Nation was arrested on an outstanding warrant from Saskatoon Police Service for a charge of possession of property obtained by crime. He was released and is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 22, 2024.
41-year-old Malcolm Moccasin of Moosomin First Nation was arrested on outstanding warrants from Battlefords RCMP for charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, fail to comply with probation order, unlawful possession of firearm in motor vehicle, careless use of a firearm, failure to appear in court and fail to comply with release order conditions. He appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on October 31, 2024.
The other adult female and adult males were later released without charges.
Nicole Poitras made her first court appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court on November 1, 2024.
