News release

In January of 2023, a series of incidents in the Whitehorse area were reported to Yukon RCMP. Yukon RCMP apprehended an individual on February 16, 2024. We can now provide an update on the outcome of these investigations.

On January 24, 2023, at 10:00 pm, a resident in Whitehorse called to report that they had found a bullet in their living room and a hole in the wall. They believed the bullet to have come through the wall from an adjacent residence. Police executed a search warrant on that residence and determined that the home had been broken into earlier that day. The victim living there, reported two masked and armed males pushed their way into the house and assaulted him. The men were assaulting him with a handgun when a gun went off, but no one was hit. Police believed the home invasion was targeted.

On January 24, 2023 at 4:26 am, Whitehorse RCMP were dispatched to a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Two Mile Hill and the Alaska Highway. A white Dodge Ram truck had collided with a City of Whitehorse snow removal dump truck. The two occupants from the Dodge Ram fled the scene on foot, and the driver of the dump truck believed one of the occupants was carrying something that looked like a firearm. Police Dog Services and members of the Emergency Response Team tracked the occupants to the Canada Games Center parking lot where the suspects were thought to have then been picked up by a vehicle. Police continued to investigate these cases and believed them to be related.

Subsequent to a lengthy investigation, on February 16, 2024, shortly after noon, Mr. Ryan-MacKinnon was arrested in downtown Whitehorse.

Lorne Ryan-MacKinnon has been charged with the following offences: Careless Use of a Firearm, Assault with a Weapon, Kidnapping while using a Restricted Firearm, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance and Break and Enter Dwelling House, Commit an Indictable Offence.
