PEI RCMP Traffic Services charged a 71-year-old Brooklyn PEI man with impaired driving after a collision involving his vehicle and a bicycle.

Just after 7:00 p.m. on Thursday September 5, 2024 West Prince RCMP Traffic Services responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a collision between a single vehicle and an individual on a bicycle on Church St. in Alberton. Alberton Fire Services and Island EMS were also dispatched to the incident. The cyclist was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Also at the scene, RCMP spoke with the driver of the vehicle who admitted to having consumed alcohol earlier in the day, further telling police he was not impaired at the time of the collision. The driver failed a roadside breath screening and was taken to West Prince detachment where he was administered a further blood alcohol test. The man failed these tests with readings of 120 and 110 mg% per 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 0.08 mg% per 100 ml of blood.

The man was charged with driving while impaired, his vehicle was impounded and he received a 90-day suspension of his driver's license.

RCMP are grateful to the individual who called 9-1-1 in this instance and remind everyone if you suspect an impaired driver this is an emergency and you should call 9-1-1.
