On July 14, 2024, Behchokǫ̀ RCMP received a report that two people had escaped from a residence in the community where they had been held against their will by an armed man. Information indicated that a third person was still inside the residence, also being held.
Officers attended the residence. The "G" Division Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and Crisis Negotiators were engaged and attended the community.
The accused was contacted by negotiators and departed the residence. He was taken into custody. No injuries were reported as a result of this occurrence.
As a result of the investigation 41-year-old David WEDZIN has been charged with:
- Pointing a Firearm, contrary to section 87(1) of the Criminal Code (2 counts)
- Uttering Threats, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
- Obstructing a Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code
- Resisting a Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code
He was held to appear before a Justice of the Peace and subsequently remanded into custody. He is scheduled to appear in Justice of the Peace court once again on July 16, 2024.
