Update: Charges laid after attempted murder in Nipawin, Saskatchewan

On August 1, 2023, the Saskatchewan RCMP's Prince Albert General Investigation Section, with assistance from Nipawin RCMP, arrested an individual after executing a warrant in relation to a March 8, 2023 assault with a weapon investigation.

Upon further investigation, 29-year-old Denisha Bear of Nipawin, Saskatchewan has received the following charges in relation to a July 26, 2023 shooting that took place at a residence in Nipawin:

  • One count - Attempted Murder with firearm as per S. 239(1)(a) CC;
  • One count - Uttering threats against a person as per S. 264.1(1)(a) CC;
  • One count - Without lawful excuse, point a firearm as per S. 87(1) CC;
  • One count - Posses a firearm without being the holder of a licence as per S. 91(1) CC;
  • One count - Carry a firearm for dangerous purpose to the public peace as per S. 88 CC;
  • One count - Having destroyed a firearm, failed to report the destruction to a peace officer, firearms officer or chief's firearms officer with reasonable despatch as per S. 106(2) CC;
  • One count - Possess a prohibited weapon as per S. 91(2) CC;
  • One count - Possess weapon dangerous to public as per S. 88 CC.

The victim of the July 26, 2023 shooting remains in hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

Denisha Bear is scheduled to appear in Nipawin Provincial Court August 2, 2023.

Police investigation underway in Nipawin after male injured

Please check your home surveillance: The Saskatchewan RCMP is asking the public to check any personal home video surveillance and door cameras for footage and report any suspicious activity, people or vehicles on or near the 600 block of 8th Avenue in Nipawin between 11:00 p.m. on July 25, 2023 and 1:30 a.m. July 26, 2023 in relation to an ongoing investigation.

What happened: Around 12:30 a.m. July 26, 2023, Nipawin RCMP responded to a report of a 44-year-old male who was injured as a result of a shooting inside a residence on the 600 block of 8th Avenue in Nipawin. The male victim was transported to hospital with injuries described as serious. He remains in hospital and will not be identified at this time.

Initial investigation has determined unknown individual(s) entered the residence and a shooting occurred. The suspect(s) fled on foot in an unknown direction and it is unknown if they had access to a vehicle.

At this time there is no elevated risk to public safety in relation to this investigation. If this changes, we will notify the public.
