A 37-year old suspended driver was arrested by Harbour Grace RCMP for flight from police on May 5, 2023.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening, while on patrol, an officer with Harbour Grace RCMP observed a vehicle traveling 120 km/h in a 50 km/h speed zone on Route 70 in the town of Harbour Grace. The officer attempted a traffic stop and the driver of the vehicle failed to stop for police and fled at a high rate of speed down a residential street. In the interest of public safety, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

Being familiar with the area, the officer located the vehicle minutes later on a dead-end street. A traffic stop was conducted and the man was arrested. Police determined that the driver was operating an unregistered vehicle without insurance and was operating the vehicle with a suspended licence, owing more than $7000.00 in fines.

The vehicle was seized and impounded and, in accordance with arrest and release procedures, the man was released from custody. He is set to attend court at a later date to answer to a criminal charge of flight from police, as well as a number of charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
