On September 27, 2023 at approximately 4:45 a.m., Beauval RCMP received a report of a firearm discharge on Canoe Lake Cree First Nation.

Officers immediately responded. Initial investigation determined a firearm was discharged towards two residences in the community. No injuries were reported. The incident is not believed to be random in nature.

As a result of investigation, Beauval RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team arrested two individuals without incident at a residence on Canoe Lake Cree First Nation just before noon.

Officers located and seized a restricted firearm, ammunition and other weapons at the residence.

31-year-old Harold Cardinal from Canoe Lake Cree First Nation and 25-year-old Mary Daigneault from Ila a la Crosse are charged with:

  • one count, discharging a firearm while being reckless, Section 244.1(a), Criminal Code;
  • one count, possession of a firearm while prohibited, Section 117.01(1), Criminal Code;
  • one count, possession of ammunition while prohibited, Section 117.01(1), Criminal Code;
  • one count, possession of a firearm without a firearms licence, Section 92(1), Criminal Code; and
  • one count, improper storage of a firearm, Section 86(2), Criminal Code.

Harold Cardinal is also charged with one count, fail to comply with a probation order, Section 733.1(1), Criminal Code.

As a result of continued investigation, Beauval RCMP have also charged 24-year-old Marissa McCallum from Jan's Bay and 32-year-old Shannon Opikokew from Canoe Narrows each with one count, discharge firearm while being reckless, Section 244.1(a), Criminal Code. Warrants have been issued for their arrests and Beauval RCMP are working to locate them. Marissa McCallum is also wanted for breaching a conditional sentence order.

Marissa McCallum is described as approximately 5'6" with a medium build. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Shannon Opikokew is described as approximately 5'7" and 145 lbs. She has black hair and brown eyes.
