53-year-old man charged following shooting incident

A 53-year-old man from Minto, N.B., has been charged following a shooting incident and an Alert Ready in the community.

On July 23, 2023, at approximately 4:10 p.m., members of the West District RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on Pleasant Drive in Minto. When police arrived, they determined that a man attended a residence, fired several shots towards a second man, and then fled the scene in a silver Nissan car. No one was injured during the incident.

At 5:20 p.m., an Alert Ready message was issued for the Minto region advising residents in the area to stay inside and lock their doors.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police received information from the public that the man was possibly in the Chipman area. Police attended and located the suspect's vehicle which initially failed to stop. A short time later, the vehicle stopped and police arrested a 53-year-old man at the scene.

At 6:43 p.m., an updated Alert Ready message was issued advising that the incident was now concluded, and that residents could resume normal activities.

On July 24, Rodney Dickinson appeared in Fredericton Provincial Court, and was charged with:

  • Two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence
  • Attempted murder
  • Discharging a firearm with intent
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence
  • Being an occupant of a vehicle while knowing there was a firearm in said vehicle
  • Operation of a vehicle while prohibited
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Operation of a motor vehicle exceeding 80mg %
  • Intentionally discharging a firearm at or in a residence

He was remanded into custody, and is scheduled to return to court on August 8.

"We especially appreciate their assistance in sharing our information as quickly as possible, and helping to keep 911 lines clear for emergencies and information related to the incident."

The investigation is ongoing.
