On Jan. 14, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Grande Prairie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit were conducting patrols in Grande Prairie when a vehicle was observed with a burnt out tail light. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. The officer did not pursue the vehicle.
Further investigation led Grande Prairie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit to a gas station in Beaverlodge, Alta. where the vehicle was located. The female passenger was arrested, and the male driver was also arrested after attempting to flee the area on foot.
A search of the driver, passenger and vehicle resulted in the seizure of several items including what is believed to be the following:
- Approximately 28.7 grams of cocaine
- Approximately 2.1 grams of methamphetamine
Police also seized a replica handgun, Canadian currency and multiple other items relating to drug trafficking.
A 35-year-old male of Grande Prairie has been charged with the following:
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Obstruct peace officer
A 46-year-old female of Grande Prairie has been charged with the following:
- Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Flight from peace officer
- Possession of a controlled substance
Following a judicial hearing, the 35-year-old male was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Feb. 28, 2022.
The 46-year-old female was released from custody on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on March 2, 2022.
