Chief Superintendent Trevor Daroux, District Officer for Southern Alberta District, is pleased to announce that Staff Sergeant Kathy Klassen is the new detachment commander of the Chestermere RCMP Detachment.
"Kathy is a long time Albertan with a demonstrated commitment to community policing," says Chief Superintendent Trevor Daroux, District Officer for Southern Alberta District. "I look forward to Kathy utilizing her past experiences, working in numerous communities throughout the province, to lead the team in Chestermere as they serve the community."
Kathy was born in Labrador and grew up in Gander, Nfld. She is a long-time Albertan who has worked and lived in a number of communities. After graduating from university she moved to Alberta in 2001 to seek employment opportunities. She worked as the Program Coordinator with the Rocky Mountain House Victim Services Unit (VSU). This experience and her contact with the Criminal Justice system while working with VSU, inspired her to join the Alberta RCMP.
Staff Sergeant Klassen has been a member of the Alberta RCMP for close to 17 years. Kathy was first posted to Bassano, Alta. and served in this rural community for just over four years. When Bassano was her home, she fostered relationships within the community by working with the Citizens On Patrol organization. The relationships she developed with members of the Hutterite community have carried through to present day.
Kathy then made Fort McMurray her home when she transferred there in 2009 where she worked as a Constable and pursued promotional opportunities up to the rank of Staff Sergeant. She has spent the majority of her career delivering front line policing services to her communities. Kathy is excited to be back working in Southern Alberta District as part of the Chestermere RCMP.
In her first two weeks as the detachment commander, she has taken the time to get to meet some of the city officials and community groups in the area. Staff Sergeant Klassen would like to continue serving the community by listening to their concerns as well as building on Chestermere's community engagements and crime reduction initiatives to capitalize on opportunities that will help ensure Chestermere remains the safest community in the Calgary Urban Area.
