Charges laid after investigation into fire at North Battleford apartment building

As a result of investigation, North Battleford RCMP's Municipal General Investigation Section has laid charges and arrested two individuals in relation to this fire, which was confirmed to be suspicious in nature.

Keeanu Crookedneck of North Battleford is charged with:

  • 1 count, arson, Section 434, Criminal Code
  • 1 count, arson with disregard for human life, Section 433(a), Criminal Code

Keeanu Crookedneck will appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on January 7, 2022.

Naomi Jean Yellowtail of North Battleford is charged with:

  • 1 count, arson with disregard for human life, Section 433(a), Criminal Code
  • 1 count, breach of undertaking, Section 145(4)(a), Criminal Code

Naomi Jean Yellowtail was scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on January 6, 2022.

"I would like to thank our investigators, as well as the North Battleford Fire Service and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, for quickly and thoroughly working through this investigation, enabling us to lay charges and arrest these individuals," says S/Sgt. Jason Teniuk, acting commander of the North Battleford RCMP. "I also want to thank all the emergency personnel who worked bravely, calmly and diligently at a dangerous scene to ensure all residents of this apartment complex were able to escape."

As noted by the City of North Battleford yesterday, the building's residents were successfully evacuated. Seventeen residents and six emergency responders were transported to hospital and have since been released. The Canadian Red Cross is providing emergency support services for those displaced by the fire.

Battlefords RCMP responds to fire at apartment building

2022-01-04

On January 3, 2022 at approximately 1:25 a.m., Battlefords RCMP were dispatched to a fire at an apartment building on the 1400 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford.

Upon arrival, officers found the building was fully engulfed in fire. North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services, other area fire departments and local EMS also responded. Residents evacuated the building and a number of them were taken to hospital with injuries. We do not have updates on their conditions.

Battlefords RCMP are currently working to confirm the safety of all building residents. If you live in this complex and have NOT yet spoken to police, please call 310-RCMP.

Further details are not yet available as this is an unfolding investigation. Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency fire investigators will now be assisting.
