A 24-year-old New Brunswick man who was being sought by the New Brunswick RCMP in connection with a shooting incident in Riverview, last evening has been arrested in Nova Scotia.

The man was taken into custody without incident in Amherst by the Amherst Police Department shortly before 12 p.m. on January 6, 2021.

The man had been the subject of an extensive search and an emergency alert message that was sent to residents of the Greater Moncton and southeastern New Brunswick areas via the national Alert Ready system.

On January 5, at about 5:15 p.m., members of the Codiac Regional RCMP responded to a shooting incident outside Riverview High School. A 35-year-old man who was leaving the school was approached by an unknown man, who demanded that he hand over the bag he was carrying. The suspect produced a firearm and discharged it towards the man. The victim remains in hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

"The New Brunswick RCMP would like to thank the public for their attention and cooperation during this serious incident, as well as the Nova Scotia RCMP and the Amherst Police Department for their assistance," says Cst. Hans Ouellette, of the New Brunswick RCMP.

A follow-up Alert Ready message was sent to the public following the man's arrest, to advise that the incident had been resolved.

The suspect remains in custody and will be brought back to New Brunswick, where he will be scheduled to appear in court.

The New Brunswick RCMP continues its investigation.
