The nature of the job means many Northern Saskatchewan RCMP officers, who come from communities all across Canada, may be far from loved ones during the holiday season. But they don't let this dampen their festive spirits. Officers and their families always find ways to celebrate – and spread Christmas cheer – in their adoptive communities.
"I always love hearing about the ways that RCMP officers, staff and their families celebrate Christmas in the communities they are posted in," says Superintendent Ted Munro, Saskatchewan RCMP's North District Commander. "It really shows how much they value being part of the community. They happily get involved with local celebrations – but are also quick to help others, which is so important during the holidays."
This year, detachments helped ensure some families in need had food in the cupboard and gifts under the tree. These include Tisdale RCMP, which teamed up with the Tisdale Fire Department for a fill-the-cruiser/fire truck drive. They were able to fill almost five police vehicles and two fire trucks with food donations, which we hear should keep the local food bank shelves stocked for an estimated four to five months! Carrot River RCMP participated in a stuff-the-cruiser event. Community members donated toys, gift cards, cash and non-perishable food and household items which were used to create Christmas hampers and gifts for those in need. La Ronge RCMP held an in-detachment food drive challenge. About 500 pounds of food was gathered during the friendly competition and donated to the local food bank.
RCMP employees from across the province teamed up to gather goods for some families in need in Northern Saskatchewan. Care packages including gifts, food and a turkey with all the trimmings, are being delivered by local detachments to these families this week.
Other detachments joined in festive community celebrations, including the Green Lake and La Loche RCMP, who participated in community Christmas parades. La Loche was proud to receive a 4th place prize for their float! Pierceland held their own one-float Christmas parade with special guests Santa and Mrs. Claus, to the delight of their community.
"It's heart-warming to see the ways that the community and local RCMP come together during the holidays," Supt Munro says. "We love being involved and thank communities for welcoming us. On behalf of the North District, we wish everyone in Northern Saskatchewan an enjoyable and safe holiday season!"
