The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit's investigation into the Nov. 4, 2021, fatal shooting of 44-year-old Cordell MacLellan of Edson, has resulted in an arrest and charges.
Further investigation into the fatal shooting led Alberta RCMP Major Crimes to attempt the arrest of a 21-year-old male on Dec. 11, 2021, at 4 p.m. with the assistance of Edson RCMP; however, the male fled into a treed area north of Highway 16 and east of Highway 32. The suspect was contained awaiting additional resources from the RCMP Police Dog Service and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team. As the Alberta RCMP Air Services was unavailable to assist, Edmonton Police Service Air 1 provided assistance. At approximately 6:40 p.m. the male was taken into custody by the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team.
A 21-year-old male of Yellowhead County, Alta., is charged with the following:
- First degree murder
- Possession of a prohibited firearm
- Possession of a firearm contrary to order
- Assault with a weapon
Following a judicial hearing, he was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Edson Provincial Court via CCTV on Jan. 18, 2022.
In relation to the charge of Assault With a Weapon, a second employee, a 32-year-old male from Edson, was assaulted by the suspect during a physical altercation, that occurred after the shooting, while still inside the store.
