The evening of August 25, RCMP officers from the Valleyfield Detachment, with the assistance of the Sûreté du Québec, seized over 632 kg of contraband tobacco valued at $148,697. Five individuals from Saint-Anicet were arrested.
Police intercepted the individuals as they were attempting to import unstamped cut tobacco using two pleasure craft on Lac St-François. The primary suspects had been under surveillance for several weeks.
A search of a private residence resulted in the seizure of $8,100. Several vehicles, including two boats, three cars and two trailers were also confiscated during the course of the operation.
The five individuals arrested were released and will appear at a court at a later date. They will face charges of possession of unstamped tobacco products under the Excise Act, 2001.

The illicit tobacco trade presents a threat to the health and safety of Canadians. It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. People need to be aware that they are funding criminal activity when they purchase contraband tobacco products.
