Athabasca RCMP – Member involved shooting

Calling Lake, Alta. – One adult male is deceased following an incident in Calling Lake that resulted from a confrontation with the RCMP.

On Sept. 19 at 11:15 p.m., Athabasca RCMP received multiple 911 calls from a 51-year-old male who was requesting police attend his residence. The male made comments during the 911 calls that he wanted to engage RCMP members in a shoot out.

RCMP members arrived at the residence and located the male who had called the detachment. The male exited the residence, and an interaction occurred between the male and the RCMP, before he returned inside. The area was contained by the RCMP, and the Emergency Response Team was contacted for deployment.

The male exited the residence once again and confronted RCMP members on the street. The encounter led to an RCMP member discharging their service firearm at approximately 1:32 a.m.

EMS was called and efforts were made to provide first aid to the male, however he died on scene.

No one else was injured during this incident.

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the office involved shooting and the actions of the police. The RCMP will continue to investigate the actions of the man and the events leading up to the confrontation with the police.
