The Indigenous Pre-Cadet Training Program (APTP) offers Canadian Indigenous people (ages 19-29), the opportunity to attend the RCMP Training Academy in Regina (Depot) for three weeks to experience first-hand what it is like as an RCMP member in training. The successful candidate from New Brunswick to attend this year was 20-year-old Devon Polchies; he went to Regina from May 13-June 2, 2018.

Depot hosted 25 APTP candidates from across Canada who completed the three-week training. The training focussed on problem-solving skills, law enforcement, public speaking, cultural diversity, etc. "It was an amazing experience, I learned so much in the short time that I was there," said Devon. "The experience, without a doubt, answered the questions I had about being a police officer, and whether or not I wanted to pursue this as a career."

Since returning from Depot, Devon has been working with Community Program Officer for Indigenous Communities Hillary Daigle, in the Oromocto area. In 2011, Hillary also participated in the APTP program and she feels the same about her experience. "The experience was hands down the best and most rewarding summer job a student could have. The experience the Indigenous Pre-Cadet Training Program offers to youth is absolutely amazing. Seven years later, I can still say my job that summer, was the best one I ever had. I encourage any Indigenous youth to apply if they are thinking about joining the RCMP."

The New Brunswick RCMP would like to congratulate Devon on being chosen this year and for being a part of the program! If you want further information on how to apply, please contact Sgt. Donald Daigle at donald.daigle@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
