Statement re: recording of meeting following shooting in Portapique

October 21, 2022
Ottawa, Ontario

Statement

The horrific events of April 2020, in Nova Scotia have forever changed the lives of victims' families, community members and RCMP employees across Nova Scotia and beyond. The sharing of information and briefings with the Minister of Public Safety are necessary, particularly during significant operational incidents. This is standard procedure, and does not impact the integrity of ongoing investigations or interfere with the independence of the RCMP. On April 28, 2020, the Commissioner met with Nova Scotia RCMP colleagues to discuss a number of things. This included the flow of information to RCMP national headquarters on the investigation and the public release of information. In June of this year, RCMP senior management was made aware that a recording was made in relation to some part of the April 28th, 2020 meeting. The RCMP has retrieved everything that was recorded. It represents a portion of the April meeting. The recording has now been released. Commissioner Lucki has already addressed the recording publicly at the MCC and Parliament. Her statements and information provided at that time still stand, please refer to transcripts at https://masscasualtycommission.ca/. The RCMP is currently in the process of preparing an affidavit as requested by the MCC providing more details around the circumstances surrounding the recording and its recovery and has no further comment at this time.
