Yukon RCMP Traffic Services held another Traffic Foundations Course the week of October 28. Ten police officers, posted in communities throughout the Yukon, were trained on the approved screening device, radar, laser and relevant legislation.
During the training officers:
- Conducted 2 school zone enforcements
- Held 3 sobriety check-stops where 55 mandatory screening demands were made
- Issued 20 violation tickets and 3 warnings.
On the last day, officers arrested a known prohibited driver who was observed passing through a stationary laser operation. After pulling over, the driver fled on foot but was apprehended following a brief foot chase. The driver was in possession of illegal drugs, resulting in charges under the Criminal Code and Motor Vehicle Act.
"The holiday season is rapidly approaching, you can anticipate officers will be conducting enforcement and check-stops throughout the Yukon. We hope that all Yukoners are driving sober and safely" – Corporal Natasha Dunmall, Supervisor, Yukon RCMP Traffic Services
"Every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and thousands are injured in crashes involving alcohol, cannabis and/or other drugs. Impaired driving is 100% preventable. Please make smart choices. Never drive while under the influence of alcohol, cannabis and/or other drugs that cause impairment. Never accept a ride from a driver who impaired. If you see a driver you suspect is impaired, call 911 to report it to police. The call you make could save a life." - Jacquelyn (Jacquie) Van Marck, President MADD Whitehorse
