Yellowknife RCMP has arrested 2 motorists suspected to be impaired by drugs so far this week.
On July 8th, 2024, an RCMP Traffic Services officer observed a vehicle speed through 2 school zones in downtown Yellowknife. The driver was stopped and clear signs of impairment were observed. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were administered to the driver, who failed and was subsequently arrested. A Drug Recognition Expert performed an evaluation on the driver, who was later released.
On July 10th, 2024, Yellowknife RCMP received a report of a driver who appeared to be falling asleep and was suspected to be impaired. Officers made contact with the driver, who was given and failed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The driver was arrested and underwent examination from a Drug Recognition Expert. The driver was later released.
These matters remain under investigation, pending the results of forensic laboratory analysis. No charges have been laid yet.
Impaired Driving remains a leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Many drug-impaired (especially cannabis-impaired) drivers believe they are sober and capable of driving, underestimating the impact of drugs on their motor skills and reactions times.
Police in the Northwest Territories, like elsewhere in Canada, have the tools and training to detect drug-impairment. Those who drive under the influence can expect to be arrested and charged.
Anyone who has information about these matters, or any suspected impaired driver is asked to contact the Yellowknife RCMP at 669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911.
