On August 31, 2024, at approximately 1:05 pm, The Pas RCMP received a report that assistance was needed at a residence in The Pas. Police attended and ascertained that a male was behaving in a threatening manner to the residents of the home. When police attempted to arrest the male, the male struck one of the officers, causing the officer to fall backward and sustain serious injury. The male then fled the residence.
A responding RCMP officer saw the suspect on a nearby road and arrested Harvey Bignell, 31, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation. It was determined that Bignell was on house arrest for a previous offence and should not have been outside of his residence. He is charged with Assault Police Officer, Escape Lawful Custody, Resist Arrest x2, and Breach Release Order x2. He is remanded in custody.
The officer was treated at hospital and has since been released.
