Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team notified after officer-involved death

On September 8, 2024 at approximately 6:45 a.m., Shellbrook RCMP received a report of an assault on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

As officers responded and approached a residence, a confrontation occurred with the adult male causing the officers to seek cover.

The adult male fled inside the residence. Two adults and two children were inside the residence.

Officers contained the scene and Saskatchewan RCMP's Critical Incident Response Team was engaged to assist. During the police response, a firearm was discharged and the adult male sustained injuries as a result. Officers initiated life-saving efforts until EMS arrived at the scene.

The adult male, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was later pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene. His family has been notified.

One officer is receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries that occurred during the police response. No other officers reported physical injuries.

As required by The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). SIRT will investigate the Saskatchewan RCMP's interaction with the deceased and the circumstances of his death.

The Saskatchewan RCMP is disclosing this as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency.
