Yukon RCMP reminds all boaters of the following safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable boating season:

  • Ensure everyone onboard wears an approved life-jacket. Some Yukon waters can be very cold even in the summer. Did you know that cold water can impact your swimming abilities? Always wear a life jacket in case of accidental immersion in cold water.
  • Carry all necessary equipment on board - did you know there are minimum safety equipment requirements by boat type and length?
  • Never drink alcohol or consume drugs before operating a vessel or personal watercraft
  • Always have enough fuel onboard to get you to your destination, and back!
  • Be aware of changing weather conditions
  • Tell a responsible person about your trip plan.

"Boating safety holds significant importance due to the potential risks and dangers associated with water activities. It is crucial to prioritize safety measures to prevent accidents, injuries, and even fatalities while out on the water. Adhering to boating safety guidelines and regulations can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved." – Sergeant Dave Wallace, one of Yukon RCMP's Search and Rescue managers
