Prince District RCMP lay impaired driving causing death from fatal Albany crash

September 18, 2024, Albany Prince Edward Island. Prince District RCMP have laid two counts of impaired driving causing death charges against a 25-year-old Charlottetown man. This is in connection to a single vehicle crash that took the lives of two people on August 2nd.

On August 2nd, 2024 at 4:40 a.m. Prince District RCMP responded to a single vehicle crash in Albany. Four occupants were in the vehicle at the time. A 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 24-year-old man later died of his injuries. Another occupant was injured in this collision with non-life-threatening injuries.

Thommachen Thomas Panackal has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing driving causing death, two counts of impaired driving over 80 mg causing death and driving while prohibited. His first appearance court date will be on September 25, 2024 at 9:00 am in Summerside Provincial Court.

This investigation was assisted by the RCMP Provincial Reconstruction Unit, and the RCMP Major Crime Unit.

"In the wake of this tragic incident, where two lives were lost, we urge everyone to take action if they suspect someone is driving under the influence. If you see someone showing signs of impaired driving—swerving, speeding, or erratic behavior—don't hesitate. Your quick response could prevent a tragedy and help keep our roads safe" said Cpl.
