PEI RCMP are grateful to have recently participated in a KAIROS Blanket Ceremony hosted by Sarah Stewart-Jackson and an amazing team from the Native Council of PEI. These ceremonies hold profound significance in First Nations communities, symbolizing reconciliation, healing, and understanding.

During the ceremony, participants gather around blankets arranged on the floor, which represents Mother Earth, specifically our home on Turtle Island - Epekwitk. At the start of the ceremony participants roam the "earth" on the blankets, while readings of the impacts of colonization are presented, the blankets begin to disappear and participants are asked to take their seats. This was incredibly impactful as these readings, and the removal of people from the circle fosters empathy, connection, and a deeper understanding of the impacts of colonization, assimilation, and other historical injustices on Indigenous peoples. We recognize this as a way to build stronger relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. It's a powerful way to honor Indigenous traditions, promote cultural awareness, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

PEI RCMP were joined by our partners from the Province of PEI Department of Justice & Public Safety, PEI Conservation Officers, Atlantic Police Academy, and Service Canada. A special shout out to HMCS Queen Charlotte and the ship's company who hosted us at their Naval Reserve Unit. This ceremony underscores our commitment to building stronger relationships with First Nations communities across PEI. Recognizing the impact of historical injustices and working towards reconciliation is a key part of all we do. We understand that trust and mutual respect are essential in fostering safer and more inclusive communities for everyone.
