PEI RCMP want to remind the public, in anticipation of possibly significant traffic in the western end of the Island during the upcoming solar eclipse, to drive aware. With the excitement and anticipation surrounding this rare celestial event, it is expected that roads in the region may experience heavier traffic than usual. PEI RCMP will be maintaining our strong presence in the area all day long.
As motorists prepare for travel in the western part of the province on the day of the solar eclipse, scheduled for Monday, April 8, with the darkest period (totality) expected to begin around 4:35 p.m. It is imperative to drive with heightened awareness and caution. Increased traffic volume coupled with distractions related to the eclipse may present challenges for road safety.
Safety Tips for Motorists:
- Plan Ahead: Before setting out on your journey, plan your route and allow extra time for travel. Check for any road closures or traffic advisories that may impact your route.
- Stay Informed: Stay updated on eclipse-related events and traffic conditions through local news outlets or official traffic updates.
- Maintain a Safe Following Distance: Leave ample space between your vehicle and the one in front of you, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
- Be Mindful of Pedestrians: With increased foot traffic in areas where eclipse viewing events are taking place, be vigilant for pedestrians and yield the right-of-way when necessary.
- Keep head lights on: It won't be as dark as night, but lighting conditions will change throughout the eclipse.
- Do NOT wear eclipse glasses while driving: These glasses will impact your ability to safely see the road and observe everything around you.
- Do NOT try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving: Distracted driving is a chargeable offence under the PEI Highway Traffic Act with fines ranging from $575 to $1,275 and loss of 5 points.
What to Expect During the Eclipse:
During a solar eclipse, visibility may be reduced due to the dimming of natural light. This can affect driving conditions, particularly in areas where there is a high concentration of eclipse watchers or events. Motorists should anticipate sudden changes in lighting and adjust their driving accordingly.
Drive Aware, Drive for Road Conditions:
PEI RCMP reminds the public to always drive aware and adjust your driving behavior to road conditions and traffic patterns. Your safety and the safety of others on the road are paramount. As we eagerly await the solar eclipse, let us prioritize safe and responsible driving practices. Together, we can ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
