This week, Onion Lake RCMP received a report that three individuals in a black SUV with blue and red emergency lights conducted a traffic stop on Onion Lake Cree Nation. They demanded identification from the occupants. The occupants questioned the individuals' identification and accreditation and were not provided clear answers as to who they were. The motorists were able to continue on their way after the encounter.

The individuals are described as wearing black balaclavas and tactical gear. Their clothing did not resemble an RCMP uniform.

It is illegal to impersonate a police officer. As such, we ask that anyone being followed by what they believe to be an imitation police vehicle contact RCMP immediately. If you've been pulled over or encountered the individuals described above, please contact RCMP.

As this investigation continues, Onion Lake RCMP would like residents to remember that:

  • The public can request identification from RCMP officers.
  • If you have concerns during a police vehicle stop, you may request to see an officer's badge and ID card. Both the badge and ID card will show the same regimental number and the ID card will have a photo.
  • If you have further concerns, when it is safe to do so, call the RCMP to verify the identity of the officer or individual involved.

The investigation continues.

Report information or verify a police officer's identity by calling Onion Lake RCMP at 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
