For the RCMP, 2024 marks a very special year. We are recognizing 50 years of Women Police Officers serving in the Force.
Since the first Troop of women constables graduated from RCMP Depot, there have been countless positive impacts in policing across the RCMP. The communities across Canada where women RCMP have served, and serve today, see the benefits of the skills, talents and abilities these women bring to serving as police officers.
Yesterday, in the Provincial Legislature of Prince Edward Island, Jenn Redmond, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, read a statement recognizing the service of Women RCMP officers in P.E.I.
Today, the RCMP is proud to say that women are an integral part of our workforce. Approximately one fifth of the RCMP's police officers are women, with more and more women in leadership roles. Here in PEI, there are more than 20 women RCMP officers serving across the Island, and the Force is always looking for more. The RCMP has had two female Commissioners and one of the current Corps Sergeant Majors is also a woman – these are the most senior positions in the RCMP proving there is no limit to the accomplishments of what women can achieve in the RCMP.
