On the morning of September 15th, 2024, Aklavik RCMP received a report from a person indicated they had been assaulted by a subject.
Police attended the residence of the subject to investigate. Officers contacted the individual and determined they were in a mental health crisis and in possession of a weapon. The person subsequently barricaded themselves inside the residence.
Given the high-risk nature of this situation, officers from the Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team attended the community of Aklavik to assist the detachment.
Later that evening, approximately 12 hours after the initial call to police, the subject emerged from the residence and was apprehended safely by the Emergency Response Team. They were then taken for a mental health assessment and treatment.
This matter remains under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time.
