Have you heard of the bike bus? This initiative has caught on all over the world in an effort to advocate for safer roads and intersections to schools. The concept gives kids the opportunity to gain confidence on their bicycles as they are guided by a group of parents on a predetermined route to school. When biking together, there is safety in numbers.
In 2022, a group of parents in Moncton decided to take on this initiative as a way to get their kids out the door in the morning, and squeeze some exercise into their daily routine. Since then, the group has grown to up to 30 kids, and other groups are talking about starting a bike bus in their own neighborhood.
Last week, two officers from the Codiac RCMP Community Policing Unit had the opportunity to join the bike bus on their ride to St Bernadette School: "Seeing how much fun the kids were having and how confident they were while taking their bikes to school was a great start to our morning. We know that bicycle safety starts with awareness from drivers and cyclists, so we hope other groups will adopt the Bike Bus idea as a way to get the people of Moncton used to sharing the road" says Cst. Angeli-Grou from the Codiac RCMP's Community Policing Unit.
