Statement - Arrest of Canadian citizen returning from Syria

Statement

On April 6, 2023, the RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) arrested a 38-year old Canadian at the Montreal-Trudeau Airport. This individual was transported to Alberta and appeared for a bail hearing in relation to a Terrorism Peace Bond application initiated under s.810.011 of the Criminal Code. The individual was released from custody, and is now subject to a number of bail conditions pending the hearing of this application.

As the RCMP criminal investigation remains ongoing, there will be no further comment on this matter at this time.

The RCMP is committed to working in partnership with both domestic and foreign agencies to keep Canadians safe and secure and to protect Canadian interests at home and abroad.
