SiRT investigating following injury to individual during arrest

The New Brunswick RCMP has requested the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) to review police actions where an individual sustained injuries during an arrest in St. Stephen, NB.

On September 20, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., while dealing with an unrelated matter, members of the St. Stephen RCMP observed a man on Union Street, whom they believed to have outstanding arrest warrants. The man fled from police on foot into a near-by wooded area. RCMP Police Dog Services and an RCMP Remotely Piloted Aerial System (RPAS) operator were called and assisted with the search for the man.

RCMP Police Dog Services located and arrested the individual, who sustained minor injuries. The man was taken to hospital for medical treatment. He was later released from the hospital and was remanded into police custody.

Following further review of the events, the New Brunswick RCMP has referred the incident to SiRT for an independent investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
