Saint Andrews, New Brunswick

News release

The Saint Andrews RCMP is warning the public of an online scam that has affected residents of Saint Andrews and surrounding areas.

Between March 27 and April 6, 2023, the Saint Andrews RCMP has investigated a number of complaints from residents who have reported being a victim of an online furniture sale scam from buy-and-sell pages on social media. The seller identifies as a female, and is selling various household furniture items ranging in value from $150 to $450. The seller asks victims to pay for items in advance and provides real addresses of uninvolved persons. The seller stops responding to all communication once money has been received and the buyer tries to make arrangements for pick up.

The seller involved in the scam has gone by the name 'Paige Kenny' and 'Kathleen Bird'. Anyone who has information that could help further the investigation, or who has had dealings with this seller, is asked to contact the Saint Andrews RCMP at 506-755-1130. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips at
www.crimenb.ca.

Anyone who feels that they have been a victim of this type of crime is encouraged to report it on the platform they are using, and report it to their local police. Victims should also notify their financial institution immediately if a fraudulent sale or transaction is suspected. For more information on how to protect yourself online, please visit the Canadian Center for Cyber Security website and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraud.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.
