Quick work by an RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) team saved an elderly man who was lost in the woods for nearly 12 hours in Irishtown, N.B.
On July 10, 2023, at approximately 9:35 p.m., members of the Caledonia Region RCMP detachment responded to a report of an elderly man in mental distress who had become lost in a wooded area in Irishtown.
Due to the urgency of the situation and concern for the man's health and wellbeing, RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) were called to the scene and began to search.
The next morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., Cpl. Jonathan Moreau and police service dog Nykko located the man near a trail which was deeply within the wooded area. Nykko alerted Cpl. Moreau that someone was in the proximity, and Cpl. Moreau began providing first aid to the man while waiting for paramedics. The man was later released by paramedics.
Ground Search and Rescue also assisted with the search.
"After an intensive search, Cpl. Moreau and his dog Nykko were able to locate the man, which ultimately saved his life," Said Cpl. Kevin Glode with the Caledonia Region RMCP. "The outcome of this incident could have been much different if resources were not deployed as quickly. This incident is a perfect example of how vital our police dogs are in situations like this when we need to locate someone quickly to ensure their safety."
