RCMP officers across the province responded to 89 motor vehicle collisions following yesterday's first significant snowfall.

The Nova Scotia RCMP reminds motorists to exercise caution and prioritize safety when navigating roads in winter conditions. Driving in snow and ice demands attention and preparedness.

Below are a few key winter driving tips:

  • Reduce speed: Take your time and allow for increased braking distances.
  • Maintain a safe following distance: Keep a safe distance between you and vehicle in front of you, allowing for sudden stops.
  • Ensure visibility: Remove all snow and ice from your vehicle (including the roof, windows, lights and mirrors) before driving.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: Add an emergency kit to your vehicle; include things like a blanket, salt/sand, whistle, wind-up flashlight, non-perishable food items, a tow rope and extra clothing.
  • Ensure your tires are in good condition: If at all possible, equip your vehicle with winter tires.
  • Check weather and road conditions: Before you venture out, check weather and road conditions and adjust your expected arrival time accordingly. You can find information on road conditions at: https://511.novascotia.ca/en/index.html.

The Nova Scotia RCMP is committed to ensuring public safety, and cooperation from all motorists is essential to preventing weather-related incidents on the roads.
