Hailing from New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Sgt. McKean joined the RCMP in 2009 after successfully completing training at Depot, the RCMP Training Academy. She was drawn to policing by a strong desire to make a difference and also inspired by her younger brother, who had joined the RCMP a year prior.
During her 14 years of service with the RCMP, Sgt. McKean has been posted to British Columbia, Alberta and her current posting here in Newfoundland and Labrador, where she works out of the Marystown Detachment. Presently, she is the Acting District Commander for the RCMP on the Burin Peninsula. Her previous roles include General Duty Policing Investigator, non-commissioned Officer in Charge of a School Resource Unit, Domestic Violence Coordinator and Detachment Commander.
Her husband, also an RCMP Officer, and their three children, enjoy the new experiences that the RCMP offers their family. One of their most rewarding experiences, she says, was when they were both offered positions in Nain, in Northern Labrador. "Not only did we have the opportunity to work with phenomenal police officers and get to know their families, but we had the privilege of learning a little bit about the Inuit Culture and way of life. We made lasting friendships with the beautiful people who live there."
When she's not working, Sgt. McKean spends time with her family and their two dogs, a Great Dane and a Daschund. They enjoy the great outdoors – playing sports, kayaking at a local pond or camping out for the weekend, enjoying s'mores around the campfire.
"No two days on the job are the same." she says, "I have found that there is always something new to learn and new to experience." Sgt. McKean hopes to continue enjoying these new experiences with her family while creating positive relationships in the communities she works, as she heads into the next phase of her policing career.
