22-year-old man charged in connection with firearm incident

A 22-year-old man from Chamcook, N.B., has been charged following a firearm incident in the community.

On May 1, 2023, at approximately 5:15 p.m., members of the St. George RCMP detachment responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Glebe Road in Chamcook. When police arrived at the scene, they located a 38-year-old man who was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries. A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

On May 2, 2023, Samuel Needler appeared in Saint John Provincial court and was charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Pointing a firearm

He was released on conditions, and is scheduled to return to court on May 30 at 9:30 a.m.

At the time, police believed the incident to have been isolated, and that there was no danger to the general public. The incident did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready message, however, the New Brunswick RCMP is always prepared to issue an Alert Ready message should there be a need.

The investigation is ongoing.
