The New Brunswick RCMP, in collaboration with the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety Highway Safety Enforcement officers, conducted recent traffic enforcement operation in the Greater Moncton area, that resulted in 13 unsafe vehicles being towed and 187 traffic violations being issued.
The operation was conducted on August 4, 2023, by members of the RCMP's Tactical Traffic Enforcement Unit (TTEU), the Codiac RCMP, and peace officers from the Department of Justice and Public Safety. The operation focused on unsafe vehicles as well as distracted driving and proper use of seatbelts.
In total, 13 vehicles were towed and 187 charges were issued under the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act. These included 44 tickets for not wearing a seatbelt, 26 tickets for speeding and 45 tickets for using a hand-operated electronic device while driving.
Furthermore, 72 tickets for various infractions were issued, including 26 vehicles with no current inspection certificate. Police also issued a roadside suspension and charged seven people for driving without a valid driver's license. A number of warnings were also issued.
"We want to help keep New Brunswickers safe behind the wheel by focusing our efforts on proper use of seatbelts, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving. These are the major factors that contribute to serious and fatal collisions" said Sgt. Ghislain David with the TTEU. "We cannot stress it enough: Buckle up, drive sober, follow the speed limit, and put down your phone."
The RCMP's TTEU conducts regular, targeted traffic enforcement on roadways throughout the province with the goals of improving road safety, educating motorists about traffic laws, and to reduce serious injury and fatal collisions.
