Second degree murder charge laid in homicide investigation

A 46-year-old man from Elsipogtog First Nation, N.B., has been charged with second degree murder in connection with the homicide of a 36-year-old man, also from the community.

On October 7, 2022, at approximately 6 a.m., members of the Elsipogtog and Richibucto RCMP detachments responded to a report of an altercation at a residence on Oak Street, in Elsipogtog First Nation. When police arrived on scene, they found a man in medical distress, who appeared to have suffered stab wounds. The man died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The man was later identified as 36-year-old Alexander Matthew Peters, from Elsipogtog First Nation.

Later the same day, a 46-year-old man was arrested in the community, and a weapon was located and seized by police.

Through the investigation, police determined the death of Alexander Matthew Peters was the result of a homicide.

On October 8, Nibogtoog Leonard Francis, from Elsipogtog First Nation, appeared in Saint John Provincial Court by way of tele-remand and was charged with second degree murder. He was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court on November 8, at 9:30 am.

Police are interested in speaking to anyone who lives in the areas of Oak Street or Graham Road in Elsipogtog First Nation and may have video surveillance footage, or who was driving through those areas between midnight and 9 a.m. on October 7, and may have witnessed anything suspicious or have dash-cam footage.
