RCMP restrains lakefront home in relation to proceeds of crime

August 30, 2022
Halifax, Nova Scotia

News release

The Nova Scotia RCMP has restrained the home of a 46-year-old Halifax man who was charged with drug trafficking and firearms offences in 2020 and 2021.

On December 9, 2020, the Nova Scotia RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit disrupted a drug trafficking ring by executing more than a dozen search warrants in, and around, the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The 11-month investigation resulted in 14 people being charged with approximately 100 offences related to illicit drugs and firearms.

RCMP officers, assisted by the Halifax Regional Police, Canada Revenue Agency, Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) and the Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) Forensic Accounting Management Group, pursued their investigation and identified a property and watercraft acquired through proceeds of crime.

As a result, on August 16, 2022, the RCMP, assisted by PSPC restrained a lakefront home on Saskatoon Drive in Halifax and seized a pontoon boat.

The restraint order signifies that the owner is prohibited from disposing of the house until a court hearing is held in regard to its forfeiture, but may occupy the home and must care for the property.

"Individuals involved in organized crime disregard Canadian laws and subject people to significant risk so that they can derive benefits that others honestly earn," says Supt. Jason Popik, Federal Criminal Operations Officer. "Proceeds of crime investigations led by multidisciplinary expert teams enable us to recover these ill-gotten gains."

The investigation is ongoing.
