The New Brunswick RCMP has launched a new tool to help New Brunswickers report crimes in RCMP area of jurisdiction.
The Online Crime Reporting (OCR) website is another way people can report some types of non-emergency crimes to the RCMP, without having to call the police non-emergency line or visit a detachment.
The easy-to-use website guides you through a series of questions to give police information about your incident. The entire process takes about 15 minutes.
"When you enter your information, you will receive an email confirmation with an incident number and a report, which can be used for insurance purposes," says Cpl. Hans Ouellette of the New Brunswick RCMP. "By reporting your incident through OCR, you are also helping police gather more accurate data about crimes that are taking place, allowing us to better serve our communities."
The types of reports to submit using the online crime reporting website include:
- Mischief/damage to property under $5,000
- Theft under $5,000, including theft of bicycle and theft from vehicle under $5,000
- Lost property
Do not use OCR if:
- There are witnesses or video evidence of the crime
- Stolen property includes firearms, credit cards, or personal identification (e.g. driver's licence or passport)
- The value of stolen or damaged property exceeds $5,000
All reports submitted through the online crime reporting website are reviewed by the RCMP, and are entered into the RCMP's record management system. A police officer will contact you if more information is required.
Online crime reporting is not meant to replace other forms of reporting crime. Always call police or 9-1-1 immediately if the incident is still in progress, or if it is an emergency. Incidents that do not meet the criteria for OCR are directed to the RCMP's non-emergency line 1-888-506-RCMP.
