The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is initiating an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Independent of ASIRT's investigation, the Alberta RCMP's internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the duty status of the member involved will be subject to review. The Alberta RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident.

We have invited you here today as a result of an arrest of a male by a High Level RCMP officer on May 11th that has been subject of public commentary on social media.
Nous vous avons invité ici aujourd'hui à la suite de l'arrestation d'un homme par un agent de la GRC de High Level le 11 mai dernier, qui a fait l'objet de commentaires publics sur les médias sociaux.

Good afternoon everyone.
I would like to update you with respect to an arrest of an individual that occurred in High Level on May 11th.
Yesterday afternoon, High Level RCMP received a complaint of intoxicated people causing a disturbance at the Flamingo Inn in High Level. A lone High Level RCMP officer arrived on scene and identified one individual as the potential instigator of the disturbance.
The person was very intoxicated and the member attempted to arrest the individual. The male allegedly refused to follow commands and a physical interaction occurred. Upon arrival of a second officer, the male was successfully brought under control without further incident. A video of this interaction has been posted to social media.
It shows our officers striking the subject, in an effort to bring them under control. The appropriateness and level of force used to make this arrest is under review. We are taking every step to examine and fully understand the interaction. I can share with you that the arresting officer's actions have been referred to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and that officer has been placed on administrative duty.
The individual involved in this incident was taken into custody and lodged at High Level RCMP Detachment. About three hours later, he was assessed by Emergency Medical Services and he was taken to hospital. He was later released from hospital without charges.
Given the ASIRT investigation that is now underway, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment much further.
We take actions, like the ones we have seen in this social media video, very seriously. Western Alberta District Senior Management has had the opportunity to speak with local Indigenous leaders whose community members have been affected by this. Understandably, they wish to know how this transpired. They have my assurance that we will closely and transparently work with ASIRT to ensure this matter is fully investigated.

J'aimerais vous mettre à jour concernant l'arrestation d'un individu qui s'est produite à High Level le 11 mai dernier.
Hier après-midi, la GRC de High Level a reçu une plainte concernant des personnes en état d'ébriété qui causaient du désordre au Flamingo Inn de High Level. Un agent solitaire de la GRC de High Level est arrivé sur les lieux et a identifié un individu comme étant le sujet potentiel de la plainte.
La personne était très intoxiquée et l'agente a tenté de l'arrêter. L'homme a refusé d'obéir aux ordres et une interaction physique s'est produite. À l'arrivée d'un deuxième agent, l'homme a été maîtrisé sans autre incident. Une vidéo de cette interaction a été publiée sur les médias sociaux.
La vidéo montre nos officiers frappant le sujet, dans le but de le maîtriser. Le caractère approprié et le niveau de force utilisé pour procéder à cette arrestation sont en cours d'examen. Nous prenons toutes les mesures nécessaires pour examiner et comprendre pleinement l'interaction. Je peux vous dire que les actions de l'agente qui a procédé à l'arrestation ont été soumises à l 'Équipe d'intervention de l'Alberta en cas d'incident grave (EIAIG) et que cette agente a été placé en service administratif.
L'individu impliqué dans cet incident a été mis en détention et hébergé au détachement de la GRC de High Level. Environ trois heures plus tard, il a été évalué par les services médicaux d'urgence et il a été emmené à l'hôpital. Il a ensuite été libéré de l'hôpital sans qu'aucune accusation ne soit portée contre lui.
Étant donné l'enquête de l'EIAIG qui est maintenant en cours, il ne serait pas approprié pour moi de commenter beaucoup plus. Des actions comme celles que nous avons vues dans cette vidéo sur les médias sociaux sont très préoccupantes. La direction du district de l'ouest de la GRC de l'Alberta ont eu l'occasion de parler avec des leaders indigènes locaux dont les membres de la communauté ont été affectés par cette situation. Il est compréhensible qu'ils souhaitent savoir comment cela s'est passé. Ils ont l'assurance que nous collaborerons étroitement et de manière transparente avec l'EIAIG pour que cette affaire fasse l'objet d'une enquête approfondie.
