Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigate homicide of infant in Bonnyville

On Feb. 21, 2022 at approximately 8:15 p.m., Bonnyville RCMP received a report of the death of a 17-day-old infant at the Bonnyville hospital.

Bonnyville RCMP attended the hospital to investigate as the circumstances surrounding the sudden death were suspicious. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit assumed carriage of the investigation.

An autopsy was completed at the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Feb. 23, 2022. The manner of death was determined to be homicide.

As a result of further investigation, on March 5, 2022, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes arrested an adult male in relation to the homicide of the 17-day-old infant.

Blair David Johnson (29) from Glendon, Alta., has been charged with Manslaughter in relation to the homicide of the 17-day-old infant.

Following a judicial hearing, Blair was remanded to custody and is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville Provincial Court on March 8, 2022.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information can be provided.
