On November 17, 2021 Mayo RCMP received a report of a overdue trapper. They were advised that the person has a trap line and cabin across the Stewart River at Francis Lake. It was believed that the person had gone to their cabin. The person usually canoes across the Stewart River and takes a snowmobile from the shore to the cabin. Mayo RCMP were informed that the person was both equipped and skilled for the weather but did not have a satellite phone.
At the time of the report, weather in Mayo was heavy snowfall with poor visibility. The Stewart River was open; however, the person reporting the person as overdue advised that the best method to locate him would be from the air. Mayo RCMP searched the area via a helicopter. They were able to locate the person safe and sound and return them to Mayo. Their snowmobile had broken down and they were unable to walk out of the area.
