News release

Iqaluit, NU – May 2021

Nunavut RCMP would like to remind residents that the Body-Worn Camera Pilot will be moving to an evaluation phase. On June 1, 2021, the Iqaluit RCMP officers will no longer be equipped with body-worn cameras (BWC).

We would like to hear your views on police use of BWC. Please complete the confidential online survey by going to the link below:

With the evaluation phase approaching, the Nunavut RCMP, plan to share the results of the body-worn camera pilot publicly.

Why use body worn cameras
Canadians need to feel protected and respected by the police. Body-worn cameras can help to increase the trust and transparency between police and the communities they serve, because:
- They show what happens during police stops
- The videos can be used as evidence for complaints or in court
- They can encourage better police and public behaviour

How officers used the cameras
Officers turned the camera on during calls for service, including:
- Mental health calls
- Interactions with people in crises
- Crimes in progress
- For investigations
- Public order
The cameras are equipped with lights. Green means it is on. Red means it is recording.

Remember:
- If you were a bystander at a call for service you may have been caught on video even if you were not involved. To protect your privacy we will blur your face and/or licence plate and mute or distort your voice.
- If you want a copy of a video you can make an Access to Information request.
- We will keep videos for a certain amount of time depending on the type of call the officer attended. If the video did not capture anything such as the call for service, personal information or person's face or licence plate, it is held for 30 days.
